KATONAH, NY —For most of us, summer is the time for well-deserved vacations and the lazy dog days of summer, but the Katonah Art Museum isn't content to rest on its laurels. Three of the most anticipated installations of the year will be opening soon.

The Katonah Museum of Art (KMA) will be presenting three special exhibitions this summer: Tradition Interrupted, Remy Jungerman: Higher Ground and the fourth installation of The Rothko Room, the museum's rotating presentation of a single painting by famed artist, Mark Rothko (1903-1970).

Tradition Interrupted will feature 12 artists from around the world. Using a wide range of media, from rugs and mosaics to metalwork and ceramics, the artists merged traditional art and crafts with contemporary ideas in order to create thought-provoking hybrid images and objects, according to the KMA.

Several of the the artists in the Tradition Interrupted exhibit explored what local cultural traditions mean in the globally-connected modern world. Other artists repurposed found objects to make sure that the historical and cultural memories they represent live on, or used ancient techniques to ask new questions about history, gender and sexuality. The museum explains that in our digital age, the artists' use of analog handicrafts is an act of both preservation and resistance.

Exhibiting artists will include Faig Ahmed (Azerbaijan), Mounir Fatmi (France & Morocco), Ana Gómez (Mexico), Dinh Q. Lê (Vietnam), Anila Quayyum Agha (Pakistan) and Steven Young Lee (US).

The KMA will also be presenting Remy Jungerman: Higher Ground, an exhibition focusing on recent works by Suriname-born Dutch artist Remy Jungerman (b. 1959), who lives and works in both Amsterdam and New York. Jungerman is known for exploring connections between pattern and symbol in Surinamese Maroon culture and European “modernism” in both his sculptures and two-dimensional artworks. According to the KMA, Jungerman's constructions draw seemingly disparate visual and cultural languages into conversation with one another and also pose a challenge to established art historical hierarchies and the canon’s age-old denigration of non-Western art.

The Rothko Room will be featuring Untitled (1969). Created with acrylic on paper in the last year of Rothko’s life, the painting is reminiscent of the bold colors and saturated reds of his early multi-form paintings. Visitors are invited to experience a single masterpiece "in a space designed for individual reflection."
