The 2024 Council Klondike Derby at Durland Scout Reservation was an exhilarating event filled with snowy adventures and valuable lessons for scouts, thanks to the pivotal roles played by Troop 301 and Troop 154. The winter-themed derby embraced a snowman motif, creating an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie.

Troop 301 took charge of the fire building competition, a crucial survival skill for any scout. Guiding Webelos through the process, scouts were tasked with collecting kindling and tinder before demonstrating their fire-building prowess. Using flint and steel, the Webelos skillfully lit a fire with the ultimate goal of burning a string suspended at a challenging 12-inch height. Under the watchful eyes of Troop 301, the young scouts not only learned the art of fire building but also developed teamwork and resilience in the face of wintry challenges.

Meanwhile, Troop 154 orchestrated the 2-man saw activity, offering a hands-on experience in teamwork and precision. Webelos, guided by the seasoned scouts, took turns handling the lengthy saws to cut discs off large fallen tree trunks. The careful guidance from Troop 154 ensured that the Webelos not only learned the technique but also embraced the importance of cooperation and communication in achieving a common goal.
