Tropical Storm To Bring Heavy Rains To Hudson Valley

Rain will continue through the weekend even though the track of the storm isn't yet completely known.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Tropical Storm Fay, currently located off the coast of North Carolina, could bring heavy rains to the Hudson Valley this weekend. Its effects will start to be felt in the region beginning Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

As of Thursday evening, the storm was moving north at 7 mph. It had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

While the exact timing and track of the storm are still uncertain, the system has the potential to produce at least 2 to 4 inches of rain, according to Hudson Valley Weather.

"Regardless of its track, the Hudson Valley will see a widespread soaker," Hudson Valley Weather said.

The forecast has the rain continuing through Saturday, but showers and thunderstorms threaten Sunday.

A flash flood watch was issued by the National Weather Service for the mid-Hudson Valley from noon Friday morning through noon Saturday. For the lower Hudson Valley, the flash flood watch is in effect from 6 a.m. to midnight Friday.

Here's a more detailed look at the forecast for northern Westchester, courtesy of the National Weather Service:

  • Thursday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. East wind 3 to 6 mph.
  • Friday: Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. High near 80. East wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Friday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 70. Windy, with an east wind 22 to 32 mph becoming south 7 to 12 mph. Winds could gust as high as 44 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 10am, then showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Sunday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly sunny, with a high near 87.
  • Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68.
