Vista-Lewisboro Pack 101 Cub Scouts Get a Lesson in Self Defense From Local Sponsor Kempo Academy of Cross River; Second Degree Black Belt Sensei Ken Deegan Donates Time to Educate Scouts on Safety

Cross River, NY -- February 11, 2019 -- The Vista-Lewisboro Pack 101 Cub Scouts got a lesson in self defense Super Bowl weekend from Second Degree Black Belt Sensei Ken Deegan, owner of Kempo Academy of Cross River. He donated the session as well as became the first sponsor of the local Cub Scout Pack.

"We really appreciate Sensei Deegan donating his time and knowledge to our scouts. He's worked with dozens of families and kids over the past three years and is a valuable addition to the local community," said Assistant Cubmaster Bill Bongiorno.

"I was super excited to partner with our local scouts and collaborate on projects. We have a lot in common as far as philosophy and beliefs. It was a natural to sponsor the scouts in their endeavors," said Sensei Deegan.

The hour session included teaching when to fight and when to flight, always emphasizing defending oneself in order to be able to escape an attacker.

"You always are better off fleeing than fighting. That's a last resort," he told the scouts.

He taught them vital areas to strike at attackers in order to render them unable to fight in order to run away and seek help. He also gave them needed moves to counter someone that has a hold of them or is physically attacking.

The lesson gave scouts the fundamentals in order to be able to defend themselves and something to go back and teach the other scouts. They practiced on each other in a respectful and positive manner, keeping in mind the scout law: a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Later the scouts headed home to enjoy the Super Bowl with friends and family, having learned valuable skills for the future.
