LONG ISLAND, NY — The votes are in for the race for New York State's 4th Senatorial District's Democratic candidate. Former state senator Monica Martinez defeated Assemblyman Phil Ramos, according to Newsday's analysis of unofficial vote totals.

With 198 out of 202 election sites reporting, according to Newsday, Martinez obtained 64.8 percent or 3,763 votes, where Ramos garnered 34.54 percent or 2,006 votes.

Martinez celebrated her victory on social media.

"Tonight I am both humbled by this victory and grateful for the support of so many who turned out to make it happen," she wrote. "I have spent these past few months going door-to-door reconnecting with those whom I have represented before while getting to know the people, families, and neighborhoods of the new Senate District 4, and I could not be more proud to have earned this nomination."

She also thanked Town of Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Babylon Democrats, and her community for support.

Martinez will face Wendy Rodriguez, the Republican candidate, in the Nov. 8 general election.

Suffolk County communities in the 4th Senatorial District include Deer Park, Babylon, North Babylon, Brightwaters, Bay Shore, West Islip, West Babylon, Baywood, and parts of Brentwood, Islip, Lindenhurst, Gilgo Beach and Fire Island.
