12 NYC Burgers You Need To Eat

A Thrillist editor spent a year eating 330 burgers across the country.

NEW YORK CITY, NY – These burgers are worth breaking diets for.

In an exhaustive list of the best of America's finest patties, the city's grills took 12 of the top 100 spots – though they somehow missed out on the top crown, being scooped by a cheeseburger cooked up at the unheard of Stanich's restaurant in Portland, Oregon.

Still, 12 isn't bad. And New York City did get second spot.

The list was drawn up by Thrillist's National Burger Critic Kevin Alexander who spent a year eating 330 burgers in 30 cities – tough job.

  • No. 79: Red Hook Lobster Pound's Hook Burger (Red Hook) – Alexander asks: "Who knew that a place known for making delicious lobster rolls also makes a damn delicious burger? According to the line when I went, everyone."
  • No. 77: JG Mellon's Cheesburger (Upper East Side)
  • No. 69: Rose's Brooklyn's Hamburger with gruyere (Park Slope) – "The best backyard burger you could never make."
  • No. 62: Bar Sardine's Fedora burger (West Village) – "If someone is sort of on the fence about putting crispy potato strings on a burger, you should go over to that fence and jump kick it over and tell them about the glory that is the Fedora Burger."
  • No. 60: Ruby's Cafe's Classic (East Village)
  • No. 50: Wilma Jean's Single Burger With American (Carroll Gardens)
  • No. 41: The Happiest Hour's Happiest Burger (West Village) – "I now fully understand why everyone sprints to this bar at 5pm on the dot."

  • No. 25: Grindhaus' Haus Burger (Red Hook) – "When I bit into the burger, I think I actually started crying a little bit."
