Woman Killed, Toddler Hurt When Truck Slams Into Pair On BK Street: PD

The child, 2, was left with scratches and bruises, police said, and the driver faces criminal charges.

BROOKLYN, NY — A woman pushing a toddler in a stroller across a Brooklyn street was fatally struck by a pick-up truck Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Xia Ying Chen, 66, and the toddler, 2, were crossing Bath Avenue near 25th Avenue in Bath Beach about 1 p.m. Tuesday when the Dodge Ram swung a left, according to the NYPD.

The truck hit the pair, sending both to an area hospital, police said.

Chen was later pronounced dead but the 2-year-old was in stable condition Wednesday, police said. The child was left with scratches and bruises, police said.

The driver, Faheem Shabazz, 56, was arrested and charged on the scene. Shabazz faces two counds of failing to yield to a pedestrian, police said.

Tuesday's crash is the fourth injurious crash this year on Bath Avenue near 25 Avenue, according to NYC Crash Mapper. It's the eighth injurious crash this year on just a half mile stretch of Bath Avenue.

"Our city failed to protect her," street safety advocates with Transportation Alternatives said in a Tweet. "This intersection lacked basic protections for pedestrians, like daylighting or curb extensions."
