BROOKLYN, NY — Construction on the Fulton Mall Streetscape Revitalization has begun, with the $8 million project set to make Downtown Brooklyn’s Fulton Street greener and more pedestrian-friendly.

This initiative, a collaboration between the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and the City Parks Department, is part of a larger $40 million plan announced last year by Mayor Eric Adams to enhance street safety throughout Downtown Brooklyn.

Work is set to begin on Fulton Street between Boerum Place and Jay Street, with the project expected to be completed by 2025.

"Downtown Brooklyn is our most populous borough's largest economic hub and today we are bringing it into the future," Adams said. "This is how we reimagine our city, reinvigorate our neighborhoods and revitalize our business districts: with more room to walk, to bike and to enjoy retail and restaurants safely."

Construction plans involve enlarging planting beds and adding new plantings, installing new benches and placing permeable pavers around the planting beds. The sidewalks will remain unchanged and will not be repaved.

To minimize disruption, work will be conducted from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. only and will be carried out in two-block phases, as outlined in the site plan below.

"With new street trees, tree pits, and seating on the way to Fulton Street, Downtown Brooklyn is about to get even more beautiful," said NYC Parks Commissioner Donoghue. "I'm grateful to Mayor Adams, our partners at our sister agencies, and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership for their dedication to beautifying this vibrant corridor.

As part of the broader plan, the city’s Department of Transportation also established two-way bus-only lanes on Livingston Street between Flatbush Avenue and Boerum Place, incorporating bus islands that provide physical protection for passengers boarding and alighting.

Finished earlier this year, the project added about a mile of new bus lanes, primarily with physical barriers, and revamped seven intersections.

These improvements are designed to speed up and enhance the reliability of bus service for 50,000 daily riders while also improving traffic safety in a corridor frequently affected by illegal parking.

"Downtown Brooklyn serves as an important economic and administrative hub for the borough, and the newly designed bus lanes and intersection redesigns will help ensure that Brooklynites can reliably get to destinations like Brooklyn Borough Hall, the municipal courts, and Fulton Mall," Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso said.

The $40 million project is part of Mayor Adams’ $375 million investment in creating exciting new public spaces across all five boroughs, as outlined in his “Working People’s Agenda.”
