Beloved Brooklyn Dive Bar Shuts Down After 40 Years

GREENPOINT, NY — Irene's Place, a longstanding pub, has officially closed its doors after more than 40 years of serving the Greenpoint community.

Situated at 623 Manhattan Avenue, corner of Nassau, in Greenpoint, the dive bar, cherished by locals for its affordable drinks, recently displayed a notice on its window announcing its closure following a 44-year stint.

Owner Irene Kabala thanked customers for their support over the years in a note put on the front door.

"After an incredible 44 years serving the Greenpoint Community, we are closing our doors and moving on,” the note read. “We appreciate your loyal patronage throughout the years. We look forward to seeing what the new owners have in store for this wonderful bar."

Brooklyn Magazine first reported news of the closure on Friday.

The reason behind Kabala's decision to close the dive bar was not immediately apparent, and attempts to reach her for a comment were not immediately successful.

The news of the closure came as a shock to its customers, with one community member calling it a "crushing loss."

There has been no official word on what will happen to the building or what new business will be moving into the space.
