The city issued an alert for strong winds faster than 40 mph, warning New Yorkers to stay inside and prepare for a potential power outage.

BROOKLYN, NY — Be careful out there, Brooklyn, whether you're walking, driving or long-distance skiing. The city issued an official warning at 12:35 p.m. Thursday afternoon for intermittent wind gusts faster than 40 mph for all of the NYC area. Wind at these high speeds can cause flying debris and other potentially dangerous objects and power outages.

The city government has said all New Yorkers should prepare by charging their cel phone batteries, gathering supplies and turning refrigerators and freezers to a colder setting. Always be cautious of power lines, and stay away from dangling ones. If you lose power and have a disability or access needs, or use Life Sustaining Equipment (LSE) and need immediate assistance, call 911.
