Coastal Flood Warning Issued for NYC: Stormy Friday Ahead

The rains could last through Mother's Day.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — Government weather officials warned Thursday afternoon that ocean flooding could soak NYC's coastal areas, including South Brooklyn along the Lower New York Bay, between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday (aka, high tide).

Tides could rise up to 1.5 feet higher than usual, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), and impacts on coastal neighborhoods could include "widespread flooding of vulnerable shore roads and/or properties due to height of storm tide and/or wave action."

"Numerous road closures are needed," the NWS said. "Lives may be at risk for people who put themselves in harm's way. Isolated structural damage may be observed."

Water will likely be dumping from the sky on Friday, too, according to forecasters.

The NWS is predicting up to three quarters of an inch of rain could fall in the Brooklyn borough Friday, thanks to stormy weather and "possible thunderstorms" beginning after 8 a.m.

More rain is in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday (Mother's Day), although the weekend weather probably won't be as crazy as Friday's.
