BROOKLYN, NY — Boris & Horton was never your typical New York City eatery. Instead, the Williamsburg business branded itself as a doggie date spot, where you and your pup could grab a drink and snack.

After only one year of business in the neighborhood, Boris & Horton announced last week on Instagram that it is permanently closing both its East Village and Williamsburg locations.

"Instead of dwelling on what didn't work, let's celebrate the great times we've had as New York's first dog-friendly café. From dog adoptions to weddings, gotcha days, birthday parties and everything in between, we have been so lucky to share in your big and little moments," the owners of the café wrote on Instagram.

Boris & Horton originally launched on Avenue A in the East Village back in 2018. The innovative location provided off-leash exercise and socialization for neighborhood dogs, as well as coffee, snacks and Wi-Fi for their owners.

Last summer, the concept moved to 510 Driggs Avenue, in Williamsburg, with a large dog-friendly area for daytime play dates and popular nighttime activities such as dog-friendly comedy, drag, music and art nights.

Boris & Horton will officially close down on Feb. 26, according to café owners.

News of the closing shocked members of the community, with the Instagram post prompting hundreds of comments.

"This feels like a bad dream- a massive blow to our community! Please no," a patron wrote on Instagram. "Logan and Coppy - we love you both so much," another reply said. "Thank you for providing such a beautiful and welcoming space in the dog community for so many years. Can’t wait to see what you guys do next."

For the next six days, the owners are selling off merchandise and furniture "at a deep discount," as well as running a comedy show fundraiser to support staff who will be out of work.

"Thank you for all the love and support over these last several years. We hope it's not goodbye, but see you later," the owners of the café wrote on Instagram.
