Major Crimes Dropped Across Brooklyn In January: Police Data

North Brooklyn saw over an 11 percent drop in all major crimes and the southern portion of the borough saw a nine percent drop in January.

BROOKLYN, NY — Major crime dropped across Brooklyn in the first month of 2024, with part of the borough seeing an 11 percent decrease compared to 2023, according to police data.

The southern portion of the borough from Coney Island to Park Slope saw a nine percent drop in major crimes including murder, rape, grand larceny and felony assault as compared to the beginning of 2023, data show.

Murders dropped 44.4 percent in the southern portion of Brooklyn and rapes dropped by 38.9 percent from 18 to 11, data show.

The only major crimes to increase were robberies and grand larceny of a vehicle — which increased by 72.6 percent, police data show.

Over the last two years, major crime was also down in the southern portion of Brooklyn by over eight percent. Tape and grand larceny were both down significantly, but murder increased, data show.

The Northern portion of the borough from Bed-Stuy and Downtown Brooklyn up to Greenpoint saw an 11 percent drop in major crimes, according to police data.

Murders increased slightly in January 2024 as compared to the year before but rape, felony assault and grand larceny all dropped, police data show.

Over the past two years, major crimes dropped by over 6 percent in the northern portion of Brooklyn.

Nowhere saw a more dramatic drop than Brooklyn's 78th Precinct, which covers Park Slope. The neighborhood saw a 44.35 percent drop in major crimes in January 2024, logging only 64 major crimes as compared to 115 last year.

Brooklyn's 67th Precinct, which covers East Flatbush, saw an opposite trend with a 20 percent increase in major crimes and 133 percent increase in robberies over January 2023, data show.
