BROOKLYN, NY — Only one hospital in Brooklyn protected patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries and infections well enough to earn an "A" safety grade this year, according to a new ranking.

The borough's 13 hospitals did not fare well in new ratings from watchdog organization Leapfrog Group, who released their 2022 spring grades on Monday.

A whopping seven Brooklyn hospitals were given a D grade, four received a C and only one of the borough's hospitals were given B and A grades in the ranking, which analyzes a hospital's ability to prevent errors that harm its patients.

The borough was not alone — only six hospitals citywide did well enough to earn an A grade, according to the ranking.

"The health care workforce has faced unprecedented levels of pressure during the pandemic, and as a result, patients' experience with their care appears to have suffered," Leapfrog President Leah Binder said of the national results. "We commend the workforce for their heroic efforts these past few years and now strongly urge hospital leadership to recommit to improved care—from communication to responsiveness—and get back on track with patient safety outcomes."

Nationally, a third of hospitals received an A grade, 24 percent received a B, 36 percent received a C and less than 10 percent received a D or an F grade, according to the organization.

Safety grades are released by the nonprofit organization twice per year, in the spring and the fall. The ratings of nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country focus on accidents, injuries and infections, and help to assess how well a facility prevents medical errors and other harm to patients.

In New York City, six hospitals were given an A, two received a B, 22 were given a C and 14 received a D, ratings show.

The only hospital in Brooklyn to get high marks was Sunset Park's NYU Langone branch. The next highest-scoring location was The Brooklyn Hospital Center, found in Fort Greene.
