'Severe' NYC Thunderstorm Possible for Tuesday Commute

Complete with "damaging winds" and a chance of hail, government forecasters say.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — Tuesday afternoon and evening commuters in NYC could be hit with a "severe thunderstorm" complete with "damaging winds and possibly hail" on the trip home, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned around 2:30 p.m.

The thunderstorm threat will be highest between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., according to AccuWeather. You can track minute-by-minute storm updates here.

Warm rains are expected to pad either end of the storm, the NWS said, but will probably taper off between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

This is part of the same system causing severe weather in other parts of the country Tuesday, according to the Weather Channel.

The high temperature Tuesday will be near 70 degrees in the NYC area, forecasters said. Wednesday is expected to be a little cooler, with highs will be in the upper 50s.

The next chance of rain will come Thursday afternoon. However, the rainclouds are expected to clear out by the weekend, when highs will likely return to the 60s. Here's the full NWS forecast for the next week.
