Fundraiser for Wounded Soldiers Hosted at Israel Chesed Center in Hewlett
Hewlett, August 1, 2024 – A moving fundraiser for wounded soldiers took place at the Israel Chesed Center in Hewlett, orchestrated by the heartfelt collaboration of individuals driven by a shared commitment to support those who have sacrificed for the safety of Israel and its people. The inception of this impactful event can be traced back to an unexpected encounter between Sara Matathias and Ret. Major Sagi Dovev at Sheba Hospital in Ramat Gan, Israel just days prior. United by a desire to contribute to the well-being of wounded soldiers, the duo spearheaded an evening filled with inspiration and hope. Kicking off the event, Rabbi Nochem Tenenboim from Hewlett Renown Chabad, representing the Coalition of Rabbis including Rabbi Ya’akov Trump, Rabbi Zalman Wolowick, and Rabbi Mendel Gordon, shared words of encouragement and offered a heartfelt tehillim blessing to all in attendance. Ret. Major Sagi Dovev captivated the audience with his remarkable efforts in training wounded soldiers and rescued hostages, emphasizing the power of resilience in their rehabilitation journey. Through the practice of Krav Maga, Sagi has revolutionized the process of healing, guiding warriors to recovery both physically and mentally. One of the evening's most touching moments came from Yonatan Ben Hamou, a wounded IDF soldier, who shared his poignant account of bravery during an intense battle on October 7, 2023, and his subsequent path to recovery under Sagi's guidance. His tale of resilience and determination and his ability to focus on being happy and grateful left a deep impression on all present, earning him accolades from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his recent address to Congress. In a gesture of gratitude and recognition, Sara Matathias presented Sagi and Yonatan with intricately designed plaques inscribed with a poignant prayer for soldiers, generously provided by Judaica Plus in Cedarhurst, NY. In addition, a silent auction was held for a beautiful piece of Judaica art donated by Judaica Plus in Cedarhurst for which Pnina Cohen won! Following the event, guests were able to shmooze with Sagi, Yonatan and his mother, Ellen, and take photos. The evening's proceedings were a testament to the unwavering support and solidarity within the community for those who have selflessly dedicated themselves to safeguarding the nation. As the event concluded, attendees departed with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared commitment to the well-being of Israel's brave soldiers.

One of the many wonderful things the center has been able to do is connect the community with our brothers and sisters in Israel.
