EAST HARLEM, NY — A six-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a scooter in an East Harlem park over the weekend, police said.

A person was driving the two-wheeled scooter about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, when he struck the child on a pedestrian walkway within Thomas Jefferson Park near East 114th Street and First Avenue, police said.

The six-year-old was thrown to the ground and sustained severe head trauma, including a brain bleed and multiple skull fractures, police said.

He was rushed to the hospital where he remains in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the scooter stayed at the scene initially, but bolted shortly before police arrived at the East Harlem park, NYPD said.

He was last seen fleeing on the scooter northbound in the park toward East 114th Street and Pleasant Avenue, police said.
