Harlem Christmas Tree Lightings Set For This Weekend

HARLEM, NY — It's beginning to feel a lot like the holiday season in Harlem and to kick the festivities into a higher gear, Christmas trees across the neighborhood will be lit up this weekend.

At least three Christmas tree lightings have been scheduled for Saturday, plus another next week. Here's a rundown of the festivities Patch is aware of.

Saturday, Dec. 4

St. Nicholas Park tree lighting

• When: 5 p.m.
• Where: St. Nicholas Park; meet at the 135th Street Plaza on St. Nicholas Avenue
• Description: Friends of St. Nicholas Park describe their tree lighting as a "cozy, family-friendly event" featuring a jazz quartet from the City College Jazz Studies Program; refreshments including warm drinks; and an opportunity to craft your own ornament to hang on the tree.

Riverton Square tree lighting

• When: 4:30 p.m.
• Where: Riverton Square, 2156 Madison Ave. (at 135th Street)
• Description: A 30-foot Christmas tree will be lit outside the 1,200-unit apartment complex, while guests will enjoy hot cocoa, sing holiday cards and grab one of the hundreds of children's books being given out to kids. It was organized by A&E Real Estate and the Riverton Tenants Association.

West Harlem Piers Park: Holiday on the Hudson

• When: 4:30-6 p.m.
• Where: West Harlem Piers Park (West 132nd Street, on Hudson River)
• Description: this free Parks Department tree lighting party will also include live music, tree-decoration making and hot chocolate.

Wednesday, Dec. 8

Marcus Garvey Park tree lighting

• When: 6 p.m.
• Where: Marcus Garvey Park, 124th Street and Fifth Avenue
• Description: organized by the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance, this holiday tree lighting will also include a performance.
