HARLEM,NY - A Duane Reade employee at a Harlem location was hospitalized Tuesday after he tried to stop a shoplifter from taking a pair of $13 leggings, authorities said.

The shoplifting at the Duane Reade store at 3387 Broadway took place shortly before 1 p.m. when an unidentified man came into the store, swiped the leggings and tried to walk out without paying, police said.

While a 56-year-old store employee tried to stop him, the would-be thief pushed the employee and hit him with an object before fleeing, police said.

The store employee was treated at a nearby hospital for a laceration and was later released.
