HARLEM, NY— Moms do so much for everyone around them. We try to celebrate them all year long, but Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity to shout it from the rooftops and post it on Patch: Mom rocks!

Here at Patch we've launched an initiative to help recognize the awesome moms and mom figures in communities like yours.

This submission comes from Flash Rosenberg who nominated Ofelia Mangen of Harlem.

What makes your Mom extra special?

Ofelia is a devoted, single mother in Harlem, who was studying for her PhD in Education from NYU while pregnant, who continued to earn her doctorate while handling full-time care for her infant son. Her specialty is how to communicate climate awareness. She was the Associate Director of Educational Design & Technology, The Earth Institute at Columbia University ... until the pandemic forced closing of the department. She continues to be vitally organizing ways for the world to be healthier and safe for the future of our children ... and all of us. Her wisdom and dedication deserves to be recognized and honored.

Why do you feel your Mom deserves the spotlight?

She is a soft-spoken powerhouse who educates and influences everyone she meets to be more environmentally thoughtful and active ... without being strident. She is effective.

Happy Mother's Day to Ofelia Mangen, and thank you for all you do!
