NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Nassau County's new 363 area code will start being rolled out to new phone numbers next January, according to a memo from the body that oversees the codes.

The memo from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) states that the 363 area code will start being assigned to phone numbers on Jan. 20, 2023. The area code will be assigned to new phone numbers only, and won't affect existing 516 phone numbers.

The New York State Public Service Commission approved NANPA's request for a new area code last month. According to NANPA, Nassau County would run out of possible 516 phone numbers late next year.

The solution, known as an area code overlay, adds a second area code to the region. Calls between 516 and 363 area codes will still be considered local.

The Public Service Commission said that the need for new phone numbers has exploded in recent years with the growth of cell phones, tablet computers and other electronic devices. Area code overlays have been a common solution to the need for new phone numbers.

The implementation of a new area code also requires people in that area to switch to 10-digit dialing for all local phone calls. However, that is already in place for Nassau County following the creating of the 988 hotline to reach the National Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
