Funeral Plans Set For Ex-LI Fire Captain Who Died At Fundraiser

ISLAND PARK, NY — Funeral arrangements for Michael Fischer have been released.

Fischer, the former Island Park Fire Department captain, died Sunday. He was 38.

Visitation is planned Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Christopher T. Jordan Funeral Home on Long Beach Road in Island Park.

A firematic service is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Fischer's funeral Mass is planned for Thurs., Aug. 18 at 9:15 a.m. It will take place at Sacred Heart Church in Long Beach.

The funeral home's website has a virtual book signing open until Wed., Aug. 24.

Along with his work with the volunteer fire department, Fischer, a lifelong Island Park resident, was a member of the Nassau County Department of Public Works.

As Patch previously reported, Fischer died from a medical emergency during a gathering of firefighters at a fundraising event.

"This is a dark day in our storied history," Chief Donny Cardineau said in a statement.

"He was a good firefighter, solid leader and better friend," Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony D'Esposito told Patch on Monday. "He will be missed by our department and community."

D'Esposito was at Peter's Clam Bar along with Fischer and many other firefighters for their annual clam-eating charity event when Fischer suffered an apparent heart attack.

Medics tried to revive him for about 25 minutes, but could not regain a pulse, Newsday reported.
