A Life Saved—by Life Guardians

Making a difference can mean so much to so many.

This week, I encountered a mother whose young daughter was almost lost to the sea. I spoke with her, her daughter, and the lifeguard team who saved her.

I recently wrote about our Long Beach lifeguards on a crew workout. So many photos show their commitment to their jobs by diving off a jetty.

I often see them exercising, training, and preparing for life-saving moments.

Many of you don’t often see the preparedness drills our lifeguards undergo, but I’m on the beach so often, with a camera in hand so that I can record them for you.

Of course, there’s a good reason for it; saving someone from drowning is not so much about that perilous moment—but preparing for it.

We’d all like to save someone from the sea, but only the dedicated have the will to learn, train, and keep physically fit for that moment.

A day at the beach can be so much fun, but it can also turn tragic. All the training of lifeguards doesn’t count —if we swim when they are not present.

As this thirteen-year-old said, swimming without lifeguards present “is the stupidest level of stupid.” Words to live by.
