The Nassau County Department of Health shut down Brixx and Barley restaurant in Long Beach on Friday after numerous people became sick with salmonella after dining there.

According to the Department of Health, there were a "cluster of cases" of salmonella from people who ate and drank at Brixx and Barley, located at 152 West Park Ave. The exposure to salmonella could go back to early July, the county said.

The restaurant has been closed while the county investigates the source of the salmonella, and won't be allowed to reopen until it is found and taken care of.

Salmonella is typically transmitted during warmer months and is usually food borne, the Department of Health said. The most common symptoms are stomach cramps and diarrhea, and usually start 12 to 72 hours after exposure. Most cases are mild and will go away without treatment in about 4 to 7 days. Infants, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems may have more serious symptoms that can require hospitalization.

Salmonella can also be spread through animal waste and person-to-person. Anyone who is taking care of someone sick with salmonella should wash their hands when making food and after caring for a sick person.
