LONG ISLAND, NY — Rain on Wednesday could lead to flooding in coastal areas of Long Island.

That's according to the National Weather Service, which issued a coastal flood statement warning of up to six inches of inundation above ground level in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline of southern Nassau and southwestern Suffolk counties.

The statement warned of flooding from Wednesday afternoon through the evening.

"Brief minor flooding of the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline," the weather service said, warning drivers to avoid driving through flooded roadways.

Accuweather called for periods of rain Wednesday with a thunderstorm earlier in the day, with a rumble of thunder. About a third of an inch of rain was expected, along with wind gusts up to 20 mph.
