Man Charged In Theft Of $8K Check In Nassau: Police

The check was stolen and deposited into another account after a man tried to mail it, police say.

ATLANTIC BEACH, NY — A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the theft of an $8,000 check in March 2023, Nassau police said.

Andrew Herrera, 18, of Staten Island, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and first-degree identity theft. His arraignment was scheduled for Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Herrera was one of two men involved in the theft, police said.

A 69-year-old man went to the Atlantic Beach Post Office, at 1848 Park Street, to mail an $8,000 check on March 15, police said. On July 26, the man was notified that his check was
never received, police said. The following day, the man went to his local bank and was told the check was deposited by an unknown subject into a bank account in Staten Island, police said.

Police were notified and recovered video of a man taking the check from the bank, police said.

A second man was also associated with the bank account that the stolen check was deposited in, police said. Herrera was one of the men involved in the theft, police said.
