It happened as thousands of students gathered at the beach on Thursday evening.

LONG BEACH, NY — A shooting near the Long Beach LIRR station sent one person to a hospital on Thursday evening, multiple reports said.

Police took two people into custody, CBS2 reported.

"It appears to be a social media [event], maybe a Senior Cut Day, and there were multiple schools on the beach, hanging out on the beach, and there were a couple of disputes within that group," Long Beach Acting Police Commissioner Richard DePalma said, according to CBS2.

A few thousand people were gathered on the beach, ABC7 said.

As they got rowdier, Nassau police officers were called to assist, a spokesperson for the county's police department confirmed to Patch.

Because of the crime scene's proximity to the LIRR, trains were disrupted on Thursday evening from Long Beach to Island Park.

The shooting victim is expected to survive, ABC7 said.
