Superheroes—and Us

There are so many hidden stories on our beach, boardwalk, streets and canals.

If you follow my photo essay blog at all you’ve noticed a theme of hidden stories. You might know someone I wrote about but didn’t know their full story. We all have our own story. But so many are similar, just the details differ.

I’m no longer surprised to find stories of overcoming hurdles, or turning career paths into joy paths. They are all around us. They are more the rule than the exception, I’ve found.

Recently I spoke with a man whom many of you may know, but again, didn’t know his story. You might relate to his because you might see similarities in his and your story, maybe the only difference is in family proximity and degree.

But I think it’s helpful to know that people who you walk past on the boardwalk or line up with at King Cullen have met challenges much like yours. Maybe not directly, in your own personal family, but in your extended family, or in your group of friends.

Seeing people just doing their best, to deal with crisis, or doing their jobs, provide an example for all of us. They teach us through their doggedness.

People doing their jobs in a dedicated way, again and again, make a difference. It’s noted by us, often appreciated—but silently.

But it’s good to acknowledge that when we see it. Some people think thanking someone who is “just" doing their job is unnecessary. I think not.

So also people who hang in there when adversity strikes them again and again. Perhaps acknowledge that, support their efforts to overcome. You'd like it, your family would like it.

They are us.

Be well,
