MASSAPEQUA, NY — The weather is getting cooler. The nights are getting longer. And the leaves are falling from the trees.

Winter is around the corner.

Shimmering Solstice

What to expect: A nighttime peruse around an enchanting outdoor light exhibit.

Shimmering Solstice, sponsored by Catholic Health, is a completely custom-built show that has been uniquely designed to highlight the features of Old Westbury Gardens. Some examples of what visitors will see include both the formal Rose Garden and Walled Garden blooming with light and twinkling in lively rhythmic patterns. Other unique features include enormous dandelions which will line the edge of the pond and a giant Christmas tree, made of lit globes, that will be displayed in front of Westbury House.

Long Island Children's Museum

Price: General admission is $14; free for kids under 12 months
What to expect: Interactive activities and whimsical exhibits

A trip to the Long Island Children's Museum can easily turn into an all-day affair. Inside, you'll find 14 interactive exhibits, a live theater, and multiple art spaces that will keep your kids entertained (and hopefully tucker them out) for hours. Due to COVID-19, timed tickets are still in effect.

Raynham Hall Museum

Price: Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, and free for kids under 5
What to expect: A glimpse into life in Oyster Bay during the American Revolution

Raynham Hall Museum was once the home of Samuel Townsend, a spy for George Washington during the American Revolution. Townsend, who was also a prominent merchant in Oyster Bay, had to give much of his home to the Redcoats during the war.

On the tour, visitors will see a bunch of exciting displays, including a diorama of Oyster Bay in May of 1779. That's when the British destroyed Townsend's orchard to build a fort on what is now known as Fort Hill.
