For All His

Days On Earth

Oh, there were so many words to describe him, lovely poetic phrases and of course, also some quite frivolous.

I didn’t use them often during those 57 years. I was far too private and so was he.

We both maintained a facade of aloofness or perhaps denial for others who wondered or dared to question.

We met by chance, some would say. I called it by another name, miracle. And from that moment on, it was only death that could and did part us.

Of course, that is symbolic. We were apart physically for a major portion of the years we shared a home and family,

But it was only physical distance that separated us. Today so very long now since our final goodbye, if I were asked,

“What was he like?”

I could only answer:

He was truly a good man, not without the undeniable weakness every human being inherits, but a faithful servant of his God.

And despite all the other adjectives that try to erupt in my memory, I think that is the only way that adequately describes the man I knew and will love for the remainder of my days.

He was truly a good man. One who served his God, his country and all those he loved so well for all of his days on earth to the very best of his ability.
