MASSAPEQUA, NY — Calling all dog lovers! DogFest Long Island is returning to Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa on Sept. 24. This year's event will benefit Canine Companions, a nonprofit that works to place service dogs with people who need them.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park, located on Unqua Road in Massapequa. The event features a group walk, a canine costume contest, a silent auction and more. Dogs are welcome to attend, but they must be social and friendly with people and other dogs, comfortable with crowds and fully vaccinated.

"September is National Service Dog Month, and what better way to celebrate than to bring your canine friends to a fun event for a great cause," said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. "We are pleased to once again join with Canine Companions to offer DogFest visitors a fun day of games, inspiring speakers, activities for kids, service dog demonstrations and more."

The event is free, but people are encouraged to raise funds for the event. Everything raised will go to benefit Canine Companions, a nonprofit that works to pair trained service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities, free of charge. Its mission is to help clients and their service dogs live with greater independence, and more than 400 people are currently waiting for their new canine partners.
