MASSAPEQUA, NY — After nearly 50 years in business, Massapequa florist Flowers By Edwards is closing its doors for good this weekend.

The family-owned shop is run by siblings Brian and Laurie Logan. It was opened in 1973 by their brother and father, both named Edward, who tragically died in 1975. Brian and Laurie took over the shop to keep the dream of their father and brother alive. And they did so for 49 1/2 years.

The shop's last day in business is Saturday, July 30. Brian and Laurie said that, after nearly a half-century in business, they've decided it's time to retire.

"There comes a time in life when you just say, 'it’s time,'" Laurie wrote on the store's Facebook page. "We are there."

The florist has been a staple of the Massapequa community for decades. It made news a few years ago when it was giving out ribbons to the community to commemorate the line-of-duty death of NYPD Officer Brian Moore. The Logans gave out thousands of ribbons to the community at no charge.

The Logans said they recently had the opportunity to sell their building on N. Broadway, and decided to take the offer.

"No more lifting 40-pound buckets, no more-15 hour days during the holidays, no more “eight” days a week, but I will miss you all terribly," Laurie wrote on Facebook. "I will hold a special place in my heart for all of you."
