Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds in The Long Island Forecast

A thunderstorm is also possible. Check out the latest forecast for the region.

It’s going to be a wet ride home from work on Thursday.

Rain is expected to spread across Long Island this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Periods of moderate to heavy rain are possible and gusty winds are likely.

The rain will continue through tonight, with a thunderstorm possible, the NWS says. The system should clear the area by Friday morning with drier air working its way in and lingering showers ending.

The weekend should be dry with mostly sunny skies and a high near 50 on Saturday and Sunday.

If you’re looking ahead to the holiday, temperatures are expected to be seasonable or a bit warmer than average from Tuesday through Thanksgiving, but “after Thanksgiving, temperatures are likely to dip below average more often along the Atlantic Seaboard,” according to AccuWeather Chief Long Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

Here’s the full forecast:

  • Today- Showers. High near 63. Breezy, with a southeast wind 18 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Tonight- Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1am, then showers likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 51. Breezy, with a south wind 18 to 23 mph becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Friday- A slight chance of showers before 9am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 55. Northwest wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Friday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 36. North wind 9 to 13 mph.SaturdayMostly sunny, with a high near 50. North wind 6 to 9 mph becoming east in the afternoon.
