LONG ISLAND, NY — The storm that hit Long Island Wednesday night dropped a tremendous amount of water over the area, though it may not seem like it.

The storm caused flooding along the South Shore, making some roads and areas impassible for hours. Data from the National Weather Service shows how much rain fell over the course of the storm.

Though the storm surge created flooding along the South Shore, the highest areas of rainfall were actually in the central and northern parts of the Island.

An Olympic swimming pool is about 660,000 gallons. Which means that more than 48,400 pools-worth of water fell over the Island in just a few hours.
