Jet Skier Rescued After Hitting Sand Bar In Dark: Police

MASSAPEQUA, NY — A jet skier in distress was rescued in Massapequa Friday night, police said.

According to Nassau County police, the water emergency took place at 9:20 p.m.

Police said a 911 call came in about the jet skier in distress near Great Island. A Nassau County Police Department aviation helicopter 6 and Nassau County Marine 6, using their spotlights, were able to locate the jet ski, police said.

The jet ski had struck a sand bar and become disabled, police said. Marine Bureau 6 was able to safely transport jet skier back to Wantagh Park; no injuries were reported, police said.

"As the warm weather approaches, the Nassau County Police Department would like to recommend that operators of personal watercraft always be cognizant of their navigational surroundings, when sunset is and have all the proper safety equipment on board," police said.
