LONG ISLAND, NY — The storm predicted to hit Long Island today is likely going to cause moderate flooding along the coast, and also bring heavy wind gusts.

In addition to the flood warning that was already in effect, the National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory. The flood warning is localized to the South Shore of Nassau County, but the wind advisory affects the entire island.

According to the National Weather Service, there could be widespread flooding along the Nassau coast of 1 to 2.5 feet, with floods of up to 3 feet in some places. The flood warning is in effect from 5 to 11 a.m. Friday.

"This would result in numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront," the Weather Service said. "A few buildings and homes near the waterfront could experience flooding. Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding could also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays."

There will also be 10 to 15 foot breakers along the shoreline, which could cause substantial beach flooding and erosion.

In addition to rain, the storm will also bring heavy winds. Average winds will be 20-30 miles per hour, the Weather Service warned, with gusts of up to 55 miles per hour. The wind advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight to 10 p.m. Friday.

Temperatures will be in the mid-50s today and Friday during the storm, but plummet down to around 13 degrees after it passes Friday night, with a wind chill dropping down to around -5 at times. The flash freeze could cause icing on roads and make driving dangerous.

"This is about as extreme of a temperature drop there can be in the Northeast," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg.
