LI Weather: Wind Advisory Issued As Nicole Remnants Hit Area

Strong winds are likely, and heavy rain is possible tonight and into Saturday.

LONG ISLAND, NY — The remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole are on course to hit Long Island today, bringing heavy rain and strong winds with it.

Forecasts for rain have decreased for much of the area, but a wind advisory has been issued for all of Long Island.

Most of Long Island is expected to get between a half and one inch of rain Friday and into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Heavier rain will be falling upstate.

But winds will be strong across the Island. A wind advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service says there will likely be sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 50 miles per hour.

There's a small chance rain will continue Saturday night and into Sunday.

Here's the weekend forecast from the National Weather Service:

Today: Showers, mainly after 1 p.m. Steady temperature around 67. Southeast wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Steady temperature around 67. Breezy, with a south wind 17 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10 a.m., then a slight chance of showers between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. High near 72. Breezy, with a southwest wind 17 to 22 mph becoming west 11 to 16 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers after 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. Northwest wind around 9 mph.

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers before 1 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. Northwest wind 9 to 14 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 36.
