Police ID 4 Killed In Fiery, Wrong-Way Crash On Southern State

A wrong-way driver collided head-on with an SUV, police say, killing three of its occupants and severely injuring the fourth.

NORTH MASSAPEQUA, NY — State police have identified the people involved in Tuesday morning's deadly crash on the Southern State Parkway.

According to police, 33-year-old Marvin Balcaseres, of Farmingdale, was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of the parkway between exits 29 and 30 in North Massapequa at 5:10 a.m. when he collided with a 2011 Nissan Rogue being driven by Ruben Sanchez-Flores, 67, of Hempstead, killing both men.

Edith Magana, 56, and Ivis Sanchez-Cordova, 34, both of Hempstead, were also in the Nissan and died in the crash. A third passenger, Nadia Sanchez-Cordova, 44, of Hempstead, was seriously injured.

Two other vehicles were involved in the crash. Roberto Mack, 32, of Conyers, Georgia, was riding a 2000 Honda motorcycle and suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Steven Miller, 50, of Queens, was driving a 2011 Suzuki SUV; he was uninjured.

Police have not yet said why Balcaseres was driving the wrong way on the parkway.
