Nassau Reaches Vaccine Milestone With 500,000 Shots Administered

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Nassau County has reached a milestone in vaccinations, officials said, with half a million residents receiving at least one dose of the coronavirus inoculation. That is about half of the adult population.

Since the vaccine is not approved for children, adults are the only ones being vaccinated. The 500,000 vaccinations is about 37 percent of the county's total population.

“The county has been leading the state in vaccinations and we will continue to move full speed ahead to get our residents protected against this deadly virus," said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. "The vaccine is our passport back to normal and we have been building up infrastructure as both supply and eligibility increase. I am proud that we have reached the milestone of half a million residents vaccinated, but we are not stopping here. Next week eligibility opens up to all residents 16 and up and Nassau County stands ready to get doses into arms."

The county Department of Health runs four vaccine distribution centers at Nassau Coliseum, Nassau Community College, LIU Post and the “Yes We Can” Community Center. In addition, the County has been partnering with Northwell Health and other medical partners to hold numerous pop-up distribution events targeting hard to reach populations.

Those are in addition to the state-run vaccination facilities at Jones Beach and SUNY Old Westbury.

The county also established designated ways for veterans and seniors to receive appointments. Veterans can make an appointment through the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency by calling 516-572-6565. A hotline for seniors was also created to get shots in the arms of the vulnerable.
