NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Nassau County just recorded a full week without a single death from the coronavirus, which is the longest stretch the area has seen since last October.

From May 20 through 26, there was not a single Nassau resident who died of the coronavirus, according to state data. The last time the county saw a long stretch without a death was late October, before the second wave started over the holidays.

"Today I’m delighted to report that there have been zero recorded COVID-19 deaths in Nassau County over the past 7 days," said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. "This is a major milestone in our county’s recovery from a once-in-a-lifetime crisis, and I want to thank our residents for the hard work and sacrifice that got us to this point. Our hearts remain with the loved ones of the precious lives we’ve lost to COVID-19."

With the vaccine rollout underway, and more and more residents getting inoculated, May has seen fewer infections and deaths than any month since last September. As of May 27, there have been 2,503 confirmed cases of the virus and 24 deaths. In April, there were 12,359 cases and 89 deaths.

Since the first recorded case of the coronavirus in Nassau last March, the county has seen 183,118 confirmed cases of the virus and 3,168 deaths.

Nassau has been leading the way in vaccinations. According to Curran, 74 percent of adults in the county have received at least one dose of the vaccine. That's the highest vaccination rate among New York counties with populations greater than 100,000.

"Our high vaccination rate means lives saved, a stronger economic recovery and a return to the things we love but missed out on due to COVID," said Curran. "It also means Nassau is ready for normal. I continue to make the case with New York State that Nassau County's extraordinary vaccination rate calls for a more significant roll-back of pandemic restrictions — especially for children negatively affected by current mandates."
