MASSAPEQUA, NY — When lieutenant lifeguard Thomas Nordland collapsed in the shower last year following a difficult training swim and went into cardiac arrest, his colleagues sprang into action, saving his life. Now, their life-saving heroics are being recognized.

Joseph Saladino, Oyster Bay supervisor, was joined by parks officials and members of the TOBAY Lifeguarding Team to honor William Arnold, Chuck Pulsinelli, Michael Greco and Evan Schatzburgh, the town said in a release Wednesday. Nassau County Police Officer Jackie Thompson and Oyster Bay Beach Manager Travis McCabe were also recognized.

The group immediately recognized what was happening and tried to revive him using CPR and automated external defibrillators, officials said. Nordland's pulse returned primarily due to the combined efforts and quick actions of the group. He was able to make a successful recovery and returned to beach duty this season.

"On behalf of the entire Town of Oyster Bay family, I am proud to commend these individuals for having the keen awareness and ability to act quickly, decisively and courageously when a fellow individual is in need," Saladino said. "Following a successful triple bypass surgery, we are thrilled that Tom was able to make a 100 percent recovery and, more fortunately for us, he has returned to lifeguarding again this season at TOBAY Beach."
