TOWN OF OYSTER BAY, NY — Starting Jan. 1, the Town of Oyster Bay is restarting its glass recycling program.

The town suspended its glass recycling in 2019 when it instituted stricter recycling measures. At the time, town officials said the change was due to a shift in the international recycling market.

Now, the town will be allowing residents to recycle glass again. It should go into their normal recycling bin, along with metal and plastic.

"Residents can help protect the environment and turn trash into cash by recycling glass and cardboard boxes on their regular recycling collection day," Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. "In addition to expanding the recycling program to include additional types of plastic, we will also return glass to the recycling stream. The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to being a regional recycling leader and I thank you in advance for helping us reach that goal."

Residents will be able to recycle plastics numbered 1-7 along with their glass and metal. Recycled objects should be cleaned before being put in pails.

Residents are also encouraged to recycle paper and cardboard. Paper goods should be tied up, brown-bagged or boxed, and placed next to the recycling pail.

Items that can not be recycled include:

  • Plastic bags or dry cleaning bags
  • Plastic utensils or straws
  • Plastic chairs
  • Plastic toys
  • Cans of paint
  • Bed frames
  • Long poles
  • Styrofoam of any kind
  • Waxed paper
  • Coated paper containers, including milk containers and paper coffee cups
  • Food-contaminated containers, including pizza boxes

If you need a new recycling bin, residents can call the town at (516) 677-5745 to request one, and it will be delivered.
