Strong Storm Bringing Heavy Rain, Winds And Flooding To Long Island

Flooding could be widespread along Nassau's South Shore, the National Weather Service said.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A strong storm is heading to Long Island on Wednesday night, bringing heavy wind and rain, and possible flooding along part of the South Shore.

Temperatures will rise to around 52 degrees tonight as the storm rolls in, according to the National Weather Service. The storm could bring up to 2 inches of rain, as well as flooding and strong winds.

The Weather Service issued a wind advisory from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday for all of Long Island. There will be sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph.

Additionally, a flood advisory has been issued for southern Nassau County from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 2 a.m. Thursday.

"Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas" is expected, according to the Weather Service. This includes near the waterfront and shoreline, as well as homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront. There could also be road closures. Flooding could also extend inland along rivers and bays.

The storm will continue through the night and taper off early Thursday morning.
