FDNY Firefighter Dies After 24-Hour Tour

The Orange County resident had responded to seven emergencies, including a fire in the Bronx, during his 24-hour shift.

MONROE, NY — A New York City firefighter died Saturday after a 24-hour tour of duty. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announced Tuesday that Lt. Brian J. Sullivan, 54, of Squad Company 41 in the Bronx, suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Monroe, Orange County, on Friday, after responding to a kitchen fire in a Bronx apartment during his day-long tour of duty which had ended earlier that day.

Sullivan was a 27-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York.

During his 24 hours on duty, he responded to seven emergencies which included several medical calls and a fire on East 138th St. at 6 p.m. last Thursday.

Sullivan had complained of pain and discomfort to his fellow firefighters during the tour, but continued to respond to calls.

At the end of his shift, he went home and later that evening was rushed to Orange County Regional Medical Center in cardiac arrest. He died at 12:10 a.m. Saturday.

De Blasio said this was a tragic loss for the fire department and New York City.

"Brian Sullivan was a dedicated firefighter who put himself in harm's way for 27 years to protect the lives of others," he said. "Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife Irene and two daughters Nicole and Samantha."

A wake will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m Wednesday, Aug. 14 and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at Smith Seaman & Quackenbush Inc., 117 Maple Avenue East in Monroe.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Still Road in Monroe.
