HUDSON VALLEY, NY — After the home furnishings giant Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy this week — and plans to begin the process of closing its stores — other Hudson Valley retailers are stepping up to accept its coupons.

As Patch previously reported, the Union, New Jersey-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New Jersey and listed its estimated assets and liabilities at up to $10 billion.

The firm said its 360 Bed Bath & Beyond and 120 Buy Buy Baby stores and websites will remain open and continue serving customers as it "begins its efforts to effectuate the closure of its retail locations." Closing sales started Wednesday, but coupons would no longer be accepted. Rewards, gift cards, merchandise credits and certain returns would be accepted through various points in May.

"Customers can no longer redeem coupons," Bed Bath & Beyond writes on its website.

The Container Store, with locations in White Plains, Yonkers, New York City and Long Island, said in a news release this week that it would offer a 20 percent discount off any item through May 31 for customers who bring a "competitor’s blue coupon" to any store location.

Fellow retail giant Big Lots said Thursday that it, too, would honor expired Bed Bath and Beyond coupons nationwide. Big Lots will exchange all expired Bed Bath & Beyond coupons at its stores through May 7.

"Any shopper presenting any Bed Bath & Beyond coupon will receive 20% off their entire purchase of $50 or more," the chain said in a news release. "This offer follows Bed Bath & Beyond's recent announcement that its stores will no longer accept coupons as of April 26, 2023, as operations wind down nationwide."

Big Lots has locations in Albany, Kingston, Hudson, Saugerties and Poughkeepsie.

Additionally, Kirkland's Home, with locations in Nanuet and New Jersey, reportedly said it'll also honor 20 percent coupons for single items at its stores through May 31.
