NYC Man Involved In 'Brazen' 2023 AT&T Store Robbery Enters Plea

The masked trio seized the clerk by the neck and said they were armed, prosecutors said.

MONROE, NY — A Manhattan resident involved in a 2023 robbery at the AT&T store in Monroe has pleaded guilty, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced.

Aguibou Karambe, 22, pled guilty Agu. 6 in Orange County Court to Attempted Robbery in the Second Degree and is due to be sentenced Oct. 16. Under the plea agreement, the DA will recommend that he be sentenced to five years in prison to be followed by three years of post-release supervision.

Prosecutors said Karambe and three other masked men entered the AT&T store in the Village of Monroe on Feb. 28, 2023. One of the men grabbed the clerk by the neck and pushed him into the back office. One of the men said that he was armed with a gun and held his hand in his jacket pocket. The men then grabbed various electronics from the store and fled.

Law enforcement officers were able to track the men to Mount Vernon in Westchester County where they were located with the proceeds of the robbery, the DA said.

At the plea proceedings, Karambe admitted to attempting to forcibly steal property while aided by another actually present.

Hoovler thanked the Monroe Police Department for their investigation and the arrest of the defendant. He also thanked the City of Mount Vernon Police, the New York Police Department and the Westchester County Police for their assistance.

“This brazen robbery was as dangerous as it was ill-conceived,” said Hoovler. “Thankfully, the rapid response of police and their careful investigation ensured that the perpetrators were promptly located and taken into custody. The safety of our communities relies on proactive policing, coupled with the dedication of my Office to bring these offenders to justice. I commend the smart and cooperative work of the police agencies involved in this case.”

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Mangold.
