Salvation Army Gives Out School Supplies, Sundaes To Beacon Children

More than 30 families showed up at the giveaway, organizers said, and many of them didn't yet have any supplies for their children.

BEACON, NY — With the new school year in Beacon slated to start Tuesday, time is running out for parents and their children to gather all their supplies.

That is why the Salvation Army Beacon Corps stepped in.

On Wednesday, the Salvation Army held a back-to-school donation at their Community Center on Main Street, where they gave away backpacks filled with essential school supplies to dozens of children around Beacon.

School supplies weren’t the only things being given out at the event. There was even a “make your own sundae” bar for the children.

Captain Jessenya J. Wiand of the Salvation Army Beacon Corps told Patch that the back-to-school event was an even bigger success than anyone could have imagined.

Of the 35 families who came to the giveaway, she said many of them had absolutely nothing for their kids.

“School starts next week, so we were thrilled to be able to help these children feel confident and prepared for the new year,” Wiand said.

“The need in Beacon is growing, and I feel that now more than ever, it is imperative to support our families in setting up their children for success during the school year,” she said.
