In New York, a court can order someone convicted of a drunk or drugged driving charge to install and operate an ignition interlock device on any car that they own or operate. It is basically a breathalyzer, which only allows the car to turn on if someone with a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) below the programmed limit blows into the device. It is illegal to tamper with one, to ask someone else to blow into it to start the car or keep it going, or to drive a different car without one if you are required to use one.

The woman is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operator (permanent revocation), both felonies; circumventing an interlock device and aggravated unlicensed operation, misdemeanors, police said.
