Herricks students and staff members had a joyful return to school from Sept. 2-4,
when doors opened for a staggered schedule of orientations. Masks could not hide the
excitement that was present as those in the district came together and greeted one another.
Sept. 8 will mark the first full day of school and principals and teachers at each building
have been enthusiastic and dedicated to a smooth reopening.

The district has been diligent about implementing health and safety protocols, and
these days served as opportunities for everyone to grow more familiar with social
distancing measures, proper mask wearing, arrival and dismissal procedures and health
screenings. Students’ temperatures are taken before they are permitted in the buildings
and different entry points prevent crowding at doorways. Additionally, families are
required to fill out medical surveys each morning using an app in order to be cleared for
attendance.

Buses are carrying fewer passengers in accordance with distancing requirements,
and as soon as students exit them, custodial staff members step on board and sanitize the
vehicles thoroughly. The buses undergo even deeper cleaning routines upon their return to
the transportation station.

In the classrooms, desks are spaced at least six feet apart. Throughout the school
day students are given mask breaks and opportunities to enjoy the fresh air outside when
possible.

“We have been getting our students situated and making sure everyone understands
the new protocols and practices,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Fino Celano. “A new
year of learning has commenced, and the district looks forward to sharing many examples
of enriching programs, innovative lessons and student achievements.”
