NEW HYDE PARK — New Hyde Park Memorial Junior-Senior High School closed Tuesday — flipping to remote learning — due to the large number of unanticipated faculty absences for a combination of both COVID-19 and non-COVID19-related reasons, according to Sewanhaka Central High School District’s website.

As of Monday, New Hyde Park Memorial had 23 cases, of those there have been 13 students and 10 staff members, according to the New York State Department of Health’s COVID-19 School Report Card. All of the student cases were on-site, while eight staff members were on-site and two were off-site.

“As always, the health and safety of our students, staff and faculty are our utmost concern,” schools superintendent James Grossane stated in a message posted to the district’s website Monday.

New Hyde Park Memorial is one of three of the district’s junior-senior high schools to make the shift this week. The district made the move to close Frank H. Carey Junior-Senior High School in Franklin Square after a student was diagnosed with a confirmed case of COVID-19, according Grossane. The state’s school report card lists 20 cases, which are all attributed to students. Of those cases, 18 were on-site and only two were off-site.

Two additional staff members at Floral Park Memorial Junior-Senior High School have confirmed cases of COVID-19 and several staff members are already in quarantine as the result of a case reported Sunday, Grossane stated. The state’s School Report Card lists 26 cases at Floral Park Memorial, and of those there are 20 students — 11 on-site and 9 off-site — and six staff members who all work on-site.

The closures of Frank H. Carey and Floral Park Memorial high schools were done in consultation with the Nassau County Department of Health. The district said that the county health department will continue to work with contact tracers.
